The New Jorge Chavez enhances Peru’s connectivity and reinforces Lima’s position as the region’s leading emerging air hub

  • One year into operations, the new airport is expanding domestic and international connections and consolidating its position as a strategic platform for tourism, trade, investment, and economic development.

  • The signing of Addendum No. 9 and the review of the new terminal’s first year of operations mark a milestone in Peru’s air transport competitiveness.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and Lima Airport, operator of Jorge Chavez International Airport, presented the results of the first year of operations of the new air terminal, an infrastructure project that marks a milestone in the modernization of Peru’s air transport system and the consolidation of the country as a strategic regional connectivity hub. They also signed Addendum No. 9 to the concession agreement, eliminating the Unified Airport Usage Fee (TUUA) for passengers connecting on domestic flights.

The exemption of this fee represents a concrete step forward in improving the competitiveness of domestic air transportation, facilitating connectivity between regions and promoting greater national integration.

This announcement comes as the new Jorge Chavez International Airport completes its first year of operations, an infrastructure project that has marked a milestone in the modernization of Peru’s airport system.

From June 2025 to May 2026, the new Jorge Chavez strengthened the country’s connectivity with key markets across the Americas and Europe, enabling the more efficient movement of people, goods, and investment.

Currently, 23 airlines connect Lima with 68 domestic and international destinations. In addition, new routes and increased frequencies have been added to strategic cities such as Barcelona, Paris, Toronto, New York, Punta Cana, and Salt Lake City, reinforcing Lima’s position as one of the region’s leading air connectivity hubs.

This growth is complemented by the open skies policy promoted by the Peruvian government and by the joint efforts of the public and private sectors to attract new airlines, increase frequencies, and promote Peru as a destination for tourism and investment.

“The first year of operations of the new Jorge Chavez demonstrates that major infrastructure projects generate tangible impacts on the country’s competitiveness. The signing of this addendum is an example of the coordinated work between the government and the concessionaire to continue improving the passenger experience and strengthening Peru’s connectivity,” stated Minister of Transport and Communications Aldo Martin Prieto Barrera.

For his part, Juan Jose Salmón, CEO of Lima Airport, highlighted that this measure complements the progress achieved in infrastructure, operational efficiency, and user experience. The new terminal, three times larger than the previous one, features state-of-the-art technology, dual-runway operations, and high standards of safety and sustainability. This has enabled the airport to achieve a passenger satisfaction rate of 91% and position itself as the most punctual airport in the region, according to Cirium.

Beyond its impact on the travel experience, the airport has established itself as a driver of economic development. The airport ecosystem brings together more than 150 companies, generates nearly 30,000 direct jobs, and has contributed more than US$3.8 billion to the Peruvian State since the beginning of the concession.

With the capacity to serve up to 40 million passengers per year and the progressive development of Airport City, Jorge Chavez is projected to become one of South America’s leading logistics, commercial, and business hubs, strengthening tourism, foreign trade, and Peru’s integration with the world.

The signing of Addendum No. 9 and the results of the first year of operations reflect a shared vision between the public and private sectors, positioning the airport as a key enabler of development, competitiveness, and greater opportunities for all Peruvians.
