Jorge Chavez Airport renews international ACA Level 3 certification and obtains the third star of Huella de Carbono Peru

  • The new air terminal is positioned among the few airports in South America with this level of certification, consolidating its leadership in decarbonization.

  • The recognition highlights the coordinated efforts across the entire airport ecosystem to reduce emissions and advance toward a decarbonized operation.

The new Jorge Chavez International Airport, operated by Lima Airport, renewed its Level 3 Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) certification and obtained the third star of the Huella de Carbono Peru program, awarded by the Ministry of the Environment. These recognitions reaffirm Lima Airport’s commitment to the decarbonization of its operations and the development of increasingly efficient airport infrastructure, within the framework of its Corporate Sustainability Approach.

This important milestone is the result of a comprehensive decarbonization strategy aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, Fraport Group’s global climate commitments, and the objectives of the airport sector. The ACA Level 3 certification recognizes not only the management of the airport’s own emissions, but also its ability to engage the entire airport ecosystem in adopting sustainable practices, positioning Jorge Chavez among South America’s leading airports in climate management.

As part of this strategy, Lima Airport has implemented various measures aimed at reducing its direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2). Among them, the use of electricity sourced 100% from renewable energy through the I-REC certificate stands out, allowing the airport to avoid more than 10,134 tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2025, an impact comparable to removing approximately 2,200 vehicles from circulation for one year. Likewise, the installation of LED lighting throughout the terminal prevented 1,165 tons of CO₂ equivalent, while the electrification of lighting systems reduced an additional 85 tons of CO₂ equivalent.

These initiatives are complemented by the incorporation of artificial intelligence to optimize the energy efficiency of the air conditioning system, a measure that prevented 42 tons of CO₂ equivalent and was key to obtaining the third star of the Huella de Carbono Peru program in the “Reduction” category.

At the same time, the airport has been promoting actions to reduce emissions across the airport ecosystem (Scope 3), developing enabling infrastructure so airlines and operators can adopt cleaner and more efficient technologies. In this regard, the installation of 26 electric ground power supply units (GPUs) made it possible to reduce 2,392 tons of CO₂ equivalent in 2025, equivalent to removing nearly 520 vehicles from circulation for one year.

“This recognition validates the sustained work we have been carrying out to reduce our carbon footprint and, above all, the joint effort with the entire airport community. Decarbonization is a shared challenge, and our role as an articulator is key to promoting a common climate vision that generates real impact,” stated Julissa Salavarría, Sustainability Manager at Lima Airport

Finally, Lima Airport reaffirms its goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2041 in activities directly under its control, as part of a clear roadmap aimed at transforming airport operations into an increasingly efficient, collaborative, and environmentally responsible model.
