Lima Airport incorporates IRBin, an AI-powered robot that promotes smart recycling at the airport.

  • Artificial intelligence-powered robot operating 24/7 facilitates plastic bottle recycling in high-traffic areas of the airport, promoting the circular economy and waste reduction through an interactive passenger experience.

As part of its Sustainability Approach, Lima Airport continues strengthening its commitment to innovation and eco-efficiency with the incorporation of IRBin, an artificial intelligence-powered robot developed by Peruvian startup Cirsys to transform the recycling experience in high-traffic environments such as Jorge Chávez International Airport.

IRBin operates 24 hours a day and has the capacity to store up to 400 plastic bottles, accepting containers of up to 2.5 liters. Its interactive and engaging design allows passengers to dispose of their waste in a simple, fast, and visible way, integrating technology and sustainability into a single touchpoint.

The implementation of this solution responds to the consumption dynamics of beverages in PET bottles within the airport, facilitating their proper segregation in key passenger flow areas. IRBin has proven to be an effective tool in crowded spaces, promoting responsible habits through an innovative experience that connects with users. In addition, those interested may register directly on the robot to participate in raffles for consumption vouchers.

“With the incorporation of IRBin, we are taking another step forward in our decarbonization and circular economy strategy by integrating technology that not only optimizes waste management, but also raises awareness among our passengers. We are committed to innovative solutions that actively contribute to reducing our environmental footprint and strengthening the airport experience,” stated Rodrigo Valdivia, Sustainable Projects Specialist at Lima Airport

This initiative seeks to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, considering the significant share of waste generated by passengers. Likewise, it promotes awareness and behavioral change within the airport community, reinforcing coordinated efforts with strategic recycling and sustainability partners.

IRBin is available in two locations within the terminal: in the domestic boarding area, on the way to the C gates, before gate C1; and in the international area, in the passenger rest area, in front of Starbucks or Kuna.

With this implementation, Lima Airport reaffirms its commitment to developing a more efficient and sustainable airport aligned with the new technological trends shaping the future of the industry.
