LAP presents balance to more than 100 days of work in social isolation

More than 100 days since the Government issued the measures of the State of Emergency in Peru to stop the Covid-19. Many economic sectors in the country were severely affected, such as the airport industry which suffered a sharp drop in air traffic at all airports.

According to the general manager of Lima Airport Partners (LAP), Juan José Salmón, from Jorge Chávez International Airport depends on an ecosystem composed of more than 140 companies and institutions that operate around the terminal, and that until the closing of 2019 all the economic activity of the airport had an impact of more than US$ 1,400 million in added value to the GDP of the Peruvian economy. However, due to the National Emergency this economic panorama has varied notably. Thus, the airport's losses have been around US$ 291 million; leaving LAP with approximately US$ 100 million in gross revenue.

As for cargo flight operations that have been developed permanently since the beginning of the State of Emergency, Jorge Chavez has operated around 1,668 cargo flights with national and international destinations, transporting products needed to face the Covid-19. Along these lines, it should be noted that the maintenance of the runway was resumed, as it is an important activity that belongs to the air logistics chain related to the airport's cargo and merchandise transport service.

Also, during the isolation period, the first air terminal has attended and transferred more than 9,000 passengers in 96 emergency flights; in a joint effort with the Peruvian government, ministries, Indeci, National Police, Armed Forces (FFAA), Migration, EsSalud, airlines and various members of the airport community.


Resumption of commercial air operations

After the announcement of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) on the reactivation of domestic flights for the month of July, the general manager of LAP stated that Jorge Chavez International Airport is ready to operate with the necessary measures and protocols, which were presented by the airport operators of Peru; for the resumption of activities as provided by the competent authorities.

"We are ready to operate again with all the security that the passenger needs. We have presented our Plan for Restarting Operations to the authorities of the Transportation sector, in coordination with the other airport concessionaires, in order to guarantee a safe trip for the passenger with the necessary prevention measures in all the airports of Peru," added Salmón.


Progress on the Jorge Chávez Expansion Project

Continuing with the works of the Jorge Chávez Airport Expansion Project, which had been running normally before the pandemic, during the last week of May the Wayra consortium was awarded the works for the construction of the new control tower of work package 2.1 (Air Side). The project was considered within the first phase of the economic recovery proposed by the State. Along these lines, LAP presented the Covid-19 Surveillance, Prevention and Control Plan for the resumption of field activities, which was approved by the MTC.

The resumption of work by the Limatambo consortium was resumed in the first weeks of June, gradually and following the protocols and health and safety measures presented in the health protocols implemented as a result of Covid-19. By August it is estimated that the last package of the Lado Aire will be awarded, regarding the construction of the second landing strip. The bidding process is already underway and work proposals are expected to be received in the coming weeks.
