-
The Minister of Transport and Communications announced measures to ensure a successful opening of the new airport terminal.
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Raúl Pérez Reyes, along with the CEO of Lima Airport Partners, Juan José Salmón, announced the new date for the start of operations of the new Jorge Chávez International Airport. The postponement seeks to ensure that all stakeholders involved in the process are thoroughly prepared for the inauguration.
The new airport terminal is a high-priority infrastructure project for the Peruvian government, it will position Peru among the top five airports in the region in terms of passenger capacity, expecting 30 million passengers in its inaugural operational year. This project will significantly boost the country's economic and tourism sectors. Additionally, the new facility will be three times larger than the current terminal, expanding from 90,000 m² to 270,000 m² and featuring five levels. In this regard, ensuring optimal operations is crucial for positioning the country as a leading tourism hub in South America.
In this context, LAP and the Ministry of Transport and Communications have agreed that the new Jorge Chávez International Airport will officially start operations on January 29, 2025, at 6 a.m. This timeline aligns with the contractual deadlines established between the Peruvian government and the concessionaire.
“It is important to highlight that this rescheduling of the commencement of operations falls within the framework of the Concession Agreement. Our objective is to guarantee that passengers enjoy optimal conditions throughout their experience at the new Jorge Chávez International Airport. At LAP, we are committed to delivering an airport that functions as a hub for services in Peru, fostering job creation and attracting increased investment for the country and the region," stated Juan José Salmón, CEO of LAP.
Measures to ensure safe and efficient access
To optimize access to the new terminal, the MTC, through Provías Nacional, will carry out improvements along Av. Morales Duárez, the main access road to the airport. These enhancements include the installation of strategic traffic lights, road signage, U-turn access points, a third lane expansion, and road resurfacing. Additionally, two modular bridges will be constructed at the intersection of Faucett and Morales Duárez avenues, improving traffic flow in the area.
A new agreement is also in development to ensure more police presence around the terminal, maintaining order and security on surrounding roads. Initially, a total of 124 police officers will be deployed in shifts to provide round-the-clock security, enhancing traffic flow and overall safety across the airport influence area.
Furthermore, the Urban Transportation Authority for Lima and Callao will launch an AeroExpreso Special service, providing a direct connection from Av. Quilca (at the intersection with Av. Faucett) to the new airport. This shuttle service will run every 10 minutes, providing convenient access for those accustomed to reaching the airport on foot.
Through the Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Government is committed to ensuring that the new Jorge Chávez International Airport opens with optimal operational conditions to provide world-class service, thereby promoting the economic and tourism development of the country.
