Nuevo Jorge Chávez receives two awards for its sustainable management

- Lima Airport Partners (LAP) initiative that prevents the emission of the equivalent of more than 8 thousand tons of CO₂ during the construction of the Expansion Project, thanks to the efficient management and use of water, waste, recycling and donations, has been awarded by recognized national and international entities.
The Nuevo Jorge Chávez, one of the most emblematic projects of the airport infrastructure sector in Peru, is progressing steadily with the new single passenger terminal reaching more than 60% of its construction. Likewise, the execution of complementary commercial projects that will be part of the first Airport City in South America is already underway.
The works are carried out in compliance with the highest socio-environmental standards both nationally and internationally, so that, in order to generate a positive impact on people and the environment, the concessionaire LAP has developed the program “El Nuevo Jorge Chávez despega con sostenibilidad”, which has contributed to the recirculation of resources and materials, the reuse of recyclables, the donation of waste for social purposes, and to prevent more than 8,800 tons of CO₂ emissions.
The initiative arose from the need to find suitable alternatives to treat, in an efficient and sustainable manner, the large quantities of waste resulting from construction work, before disposing of it in a secure landfill. This management, which has led to significant savings, in addition to having social and environmental benefits, is possible thanks to authorized operators who were able to insert such waste into a productive cycle, carried out by companies that recycle these materials. Likewise, unused water has been reused to control pollution caused by earth movement, almost one and a half million cubic meters of material has been recovered from the construction land activities, and a large amount of metal waste has been marketed and brought back to life as new steel.
“At LAP, we remain firmly committed to environmental conservation and people safety; therefore, in line with our Sustainability Approach, we implement strategies for efficient consumption, reuse of natural resources and waste, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, making the new Jorge Chávez airport an airport with sustainable management from its construction,” said Karen Ganvini, Environmental Project Manager de LAP.
Thus, thanks to the results obtained by “El Nuevo Jorge Chávez despega con sostenibilidad”, LAP has recently been recognized nationally and internationally: winner in the Environmental category of the II edition of the ESG and Sustainability Awards, granted by the Peruvian magazine Semana Económica, and receiving the Green Airport recognition from the Airports Council International for Latin America and the Caribbean (ACI-LAC). The former highlights LAP commitment to a business model and sustainable operations of the country's most important companies' projects, while the latter rewards airport members that have developed outstanding environmental initiatives with best practices to minimize the impact of their operations on the environment.
For LAP, these awards recognize the effort and work to make Jorge Chávez International Airport one of the best air terminals in the region. “Thanks to this initiative and the collaborative work with our strategic allies, we have received with great enthusiasm these awards, which reinforce the importance of continuing to work together to ensure that our activities have a positive impact on those around us,” said LAP. added Ganvini.
It is important to highlight that the Expansion Project construction is aligned with demanding socio-environmental compliance standards established by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and management models such as Sustainable Airport Construction Practices of the Airport Cooperative Research Program - ACRP, which evaluates sustainable practices for airport construction. It should be recalled that these activities were also distinguished by the Ministry of the Environment in 2021, when it awarded LAP the National Environment Award.
Finally, regarding the progress of the works, stands out the installation of the vehicular viaduct access made of concrete, and the installation of the baggage belts and the fixed bridges for the connection sleeves. In addition, the construction of the concrete structure that connects the New Jorge Chávez with the Santa Rosa Bridge Access has been completed. By 2024, the entire steel and concrete construction of the expected Airport City is projected to be completed.
